LET’S DEAL WITH THE FUR FACTS: Even if you’ve never said the word “aww” in your life at the sight of something sweet, or screamed in pleasure, or covered your face because you can’t stand a second longer of kindness, you understand. inherently what everyone gets: Otters are utterly adorable. How adorable otter? Well, on the one hand, a person may be inspired to write the word “otter” at the mere thought of ocean-loving mammals. They’re ultra-furry, they do comedic somersaults, twist and tumble in the waves, and the way they carry their babies on their bellies could melt even the hardest of hearts. But beyond these quite obvious qualities, this truth remains: caring for otters, animals that have faced extreme times of possible extinction in the too recent past, is an important part of furry fandom.
SEA OTTER AWARENESS WEEK … swims through each September to remind us of the beauty of the otter and how we humans can help these land-sea superstars thrive. As always, the Monterey Bay Aquarium will be one of the institutions at the forefront of events, and they will share live broadcasts from Defenders of Wildlife during the special multi-day occasion.
