Local council chooses Mountain Gateway Community College as new name for Dabney S. Lancaster

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Virginia. – A community college serving the Alleghany Highlands is about to officially change its name.

A local council at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College chose “Mountain Gateway Community College” from a list of “inclusive” names recommended by a task force of 25 members, the school said in a Facebook statement.

The name change process was sparked last summer when state leaders asked the college to change its name after researchers discovered Lancaster was an active member of an Anglo-Saxon club described by the historians as an “elitist KKK” organization and at one point a national officer.

Officials said the name “Mountain Gateway” would be voted on by the State Council for Community Colleges in Virginia in November. If approved, the school will change to the new name on July 1, 2022.

“I appreciate the task force’s due diligence and the hours spent away from their personal lives presenting their recommendations for the college name change,” commented DSLCC local council chairperson Ramona Garcia, who represents the county. of Bath. “Thanks to their efforts, we are happy to launch the new name. “

DSLCC will keep its name until the end of the academic year and the rebranding will begin soon.
