Hillsdale College’s Larry Arnn Plays Governor for a Fool | Pith in the wind

It’s fascinating how our culture is told, even if we can often only recognize confessions after the fact. I was about to write something about Governor Bill Lee’s bizarre and shameful relationship with Larry Arnn and Hillsdale College. Then I learned that The music mana play about an affable con man who promises to teach children but really intends to leave town with the community’s money, and The rainmakera movie about an affable con man who promises to make it rain (you might have guessed it by the title) but really intends to get out of town with people’s money, was released around the same time .

Say what you will about rock ‘n’ roll, desegregation and the Red Scare – is there anything more telling about the state of white America in the 1950s than stories in which people get scammed, many of them knowing they’re being scammed, with people warning them they’re being scammed, but they end up liking the scammer and everything is fine? What a fantasy, that you can turn a criminal who commits a crime to you into a good guy if you like him very much. That you can make a person you know is bad and who harms you a useful member of society just by being nice enough.

We’ve all seen and laughed at this joke “‘I never thought leopards would eat MY face,’ sobbed a woman who voted for the Leopard Party that eats people’s faces.” But when you start looking at how many stories we tell ourselves about how different we are and charm the metaphorical leopards into doing the right thing while leaving us to feel superior to other people who weren’t not as charming as we are and therefore couldn’t’ To change the metaphorical leopard spots, it’s pretty clear that this is a significant weak point in American collective psychology.

Which brings us to Governor Lee, who sat there like a slab of semi-sensitive spam while Larry Arnn, whom Lee wants to put in charge of schooling kids in our state, insulted the teachers. Phil Williams on NewsChannel 5 has a long story on this with lots of juicy quotes. With Lee seated next to him, Arnn said, “Teachers are trained in the dumbest parts of the dumbest colleges in the country.” Arnn received his BA from Arkansas State University. Just say.

Lee is so clearly fooled by Arnn it’s embarrassing to watch. Don’t need qualified teachers to teach? Any old fart can do it? Teachers come from the dumbest parts of the dumbest colleges? Teachers like this? Who went to college in this state? Lee is just drinking it all like he’s on the ground floor of a revolution and not the target of this scam. It’s embarassing.

Williams also reports, “Lee has repeatedly described a friendship that has grown since they first met two years ago and deep conversations about how to raise children. Arnn, in turn, hinted that his Republican friend might have what it takes to be president one day.

Oh man. Listen. The others can leave. I urgently need to have a serious conversation with our Governor, who apparently has no one around who will speak to him clearly.

Bill, you’ll never be president, because you’re a cuckold.

I hate that word. I hate that he got into my vocabulary. I reject the idea that the value of a man lies in his ability to prevent his partner from chasing after him. I reject the idea that heterosexual relationships are fundamentally contradictory and that a man must defend his relationship with violence. But it’s an insult that really weighs on the right.

And Bill, since I’m trying to reach you where you are, I’m going to use language that you understand.

When you leave a fool – from Arkansas, no less – come to our state and insult the teachers in Tennessee (the majority of whom are women) right in front of you, and you smile and take it? You don’t even defend them? You look weak. You let another man come in and make fun of women in Tennessee.

It’s the same reason Ted Cruz will never be president – he just stood there and let Trump insult his wife. Like you’re just sitting there letting Arnn insult your teachers.

The worst part is that you’re playing on the fact that Arnn is your friend. That jerk, who insults the public school teachers you ultimately oversee? Who insults the colleges for which you are responsible? Every chance he gets, he makes you look weak and ineffectual, and you swallow it because he says “one day you might have what it takes to be president? This scam isn’t even as sophisticated as talking about River City in 76 Paper Clips. It’s a pickup that denies you – tells you all the ways you’re worthless because you don’t go with it – and you run after it being everything Let me show you how wrong you are, because I’m going to accompany you with twice as much enthusiasm as necessary.

WTF, man? Where is your self-esteem?

A man who will sit next to you and insult the institutions of which you are the head and insult the people of the state who elected you governor is not your friend. He laughs at you, and you sit there smiling while he does it.

I’m embarrassed that you don’t understand this or understand this, but think that somehow you can turn this con artist into a helpful member of the Tennessee community by just liking him hard enough.

You get screwed, and the school children of Tennessee will pay the price.
