Dive Into Foreign Students Seeking Admission In Karnataka Universities | Mysore News

MYSURU: There has been a sharp decline in enrollment of foreign students in state educational institutions. The pandemic and subsequent restrictions on overseas travel led to a further decline.

According to the annual report of the State Department of Higher Education – 2021-22, which includes an analysis of trends in general and technical and university education, the number of foreign students enrolled in institutions of higher education is increased from 11,648 in 2014-15 to 1,826 in 2020-21.
In the 2020-2021 academic year, the largest number of foreign male students were admitted to institutions in Udupi district, followed by Bengaluru Urban. Bengaluru Urban remains in first position when it comes to the total number of admissions.
This downward trend was reported in all districts including Mysore which is considered one of the oldest centers of higher education in the country. The downward trend started in 2016-17. GR Janardhan, Director, international centerUniversity of Mysore (UoM), said admissions were halted during Covid due to several reasons.
Last year “there has been an improvement. Currently, about 400 foreign students are in our university,” he added. There were no foreign students in 2019-2020 due to the pandemic. In 2020-2021, only 1,187 male students and 639 female students from foreign countries were admitted. While 773 foreign students enrolled in various courses in 2015-16 at institutions in Mysuru, it fell to 260 in 2020-21.
An education department official who did not wish to be identified said admission for international students begins in November/December each year. “However, in recent years, the academic calendar of state universities/institutes has become irregular. To obtain a visa and obtain the necessary documents, foreign students need at least three months. problems due to the irregular academic calendar. This is one of the main reasons for this slow and downward trend,” he explained.
