Old Dorseyville School |
Our building, the old Dorseyville School, is about 90% complete. This is really the only place in
this rural community that we have to use as a meeting hall; maybe serve lunches to families
after loved ones have passed, do maybe some weddings, some wedding receptions, and all of
the other small group activities.
Our future plans to this building is that we'll add a kitchen to the back, in which we will serve
African-American foods. Some of the foods will be foods that are grown in this area. We will use
some recipes from some of the older cooks. We've already compiled some of their favorite
recipes. And in our daily menus we will state: "Mrs. Deb's Poundcake," "Mrs. Holland's
Gingerbread," and others. There are other famous cooks in this area. We are known for our rich
source of African-American foods.

We also formed an organization that will oversee this building, so that we will be able to apply
for grants that's available for rural communities like this, to make them come alive. This is a rich
part of our heritage, here in these United States. We call this group the Dorseyville Community
Development Corporation. Our main interest here is to enhance the life and lifestyle of
individuals who live in Dorseyville. There are 271 residents of this community.
