From a little kid I've always enjoyed drawing; and when I was first able to draw it was Lassie and
World War II airplanes. I would have probably liked to have made a career of art but my parents,
having gone through the depression, being an artist was not a very sure way of making a good
living and architecture was the closest thing I could come to it.
But I've never wanted to be
limited to just architectural practice; and I made the decision early on,
primarily after doing a tour
through Europe with a sketchbook on a fellowship when I graduated from college,
|
that I never
wanted to give up the emphasis on sketching and drawing as a way of recording architectural and
historical information. With a camera you can take a picture and get an image of a situation the
way the light allows you to do it. With a drawing or a sketch you can see into shadow; and with
the knowledge you ve acquired studying architecture, you can see the detail around an opening
back in the shadow on a porch that you couldn't pick up with a camera.
