Mud Painting (Page 3 of 3)

(Have you painted any industrial scenes? To qualify that, it would seem, without over-generalizing, that many of your scenes or subject matter is kind of pre-industrial. Have you painted any contemporary scenes?) Oh, yes. I do lots of homes, even contemporary homes, only by commission. I don't elect to do that as a painting for myself. A lot of commission work is from super-modern homes to, you know, people who feel good about their places.

That's a house down in the Garden District in New Orleans. It has no name or historical value, it's not a significant piece of architecture, but it is nice. That has recently been turned into a war zone, that area, like many of the older parts of our cities.

(What do you do if you make a mistake?) I never make a mistake. (Laughter)

[In response to another question:] When we taught art it was fine, but a lot of people come into our gallery now and beg us to teach mud painting, but actually, I think before you attempt anything that's kind of avant-garde, and that may not be a good word, I think you should become a painter first and then explore into other mediums. Because you learn design and you learn different elements of art. The secret as far as the mud painting goes, as far as I'm concerned, is finding the colors. It's not the execution of the painting, or the painting itself, it's finding the colors.
