A Family Tradition of Art (Page 5 of 8)
Painting
One-humped Camel
Albert Callais

This one-humped camel on the next picture kind of shows some of the same things. The palm tree on the left is similar to the plants in his front yard that I remember when I was growing up. There were three large cabbage palms that he planted in the mid 30's.

Painting
The Road Above the Clouds
Albert Callais

The next painting shows a road above the clouds which is interesting. He evidently didn't see in perspective. The reason his paintings are important I think to Louisiana and Iberville Parish is because he was very definitely a Louisianian and very definitely not trained in art at all. I guess I kind of meant "important" as far as primitive painting; he had no training whatsoever. The thing that is interesting here is the way he achieved the quality and texture with just the turpentine wash that splashed over a dark background.
