Man in "Joe-boat"
with Lockwood Ash motor during the 1927 flood,
Plaquemine, La.

The sounds of the old Lockwood Ash motors
were very fascinating to hear. They made a putt
putt sound, and that was a familiar sound here in Plaquemine and then later when I was Pastor in
Pierre Part. It was after 1955 when I remember sitting on the bayou bank or on the fishing boat
and one after the other, the old putt putt boats would go by and they would back fire and they had
that unique sound to them.

Sometimes these boats had little tows used like mini tugboats, and
times you would see a whole family traveling by boat. Maybe they came to Plaquemine to shop
or visit. It was the sound of the boat that was fascinating. As I recall, instead of a radiator it had
a tank of water that cooled the motor.
