And it was really also a struggle for survival, because she and her neighbors gathered in the backyard, made their mattresses out of Spanish Moss, their patchwork quilts. Every summer they gathered in the backyard together, both black and white. They raised chickens and pigs togther. They had a community garden on the levee bank, and they worked so hard all during the summer, so that they could survive in the wintertime.

And so in essense, Turnerville is not just about houses, but it's about the people who lived here, and how they survived together as one family. And we didn't lock our doors back then. You could go in everyone's home and borrow a loaf of bread, or a jar of homemade fig preserves, jams and jellies. And no one thought anything about it; everyone shared whatever they had.
